Our new report summarizing AR6 is out!

A part of the 6th Assessment Report (AR6) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), covering analysis of the physical science of climate change, was released back in August 2021 and provides some of the “best available science” with respect to climate impacts.

National and local governments, corporations and NGOs are encouraged to use AR6 as a guide in their policy-making and analysis.

But what does this important report say?

JAI has taken on the task of summarizing the findings of the new climate report in an accessible way by highlighting important changes between AR6 and the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C (SR1.5) published by the IPCC in 2018.

To do so, the JAI team not only looked to the already condensed Summary for Policymakers, but also pulled findings that received little media attention out of the background of the Full Report, such as the important role of Short Lived Climate Forcers (SLCF).

In addition to the most important new scientific findings on the climate itself, the JAI team also looked at the methodological approaches used in the IPCC report. For example, in the latest report, things called “Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) scenarios” were used for the first time. These SSPs reveal that achieving the Paris climate goals will require societies to shift away from profit-oriented economies towards sustainable ones, which focus on education and social rights.

Serious societal change is needed. Current social systems are bringing the Earth to the brink of collapse. AR6 leaves no doubt about this and states with unprecedented clarity: "It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land."

The message in AR6 is that immediate, decisive action is needed to stabilize the climate. Failure to do so threatens true horror scenarios, such as a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. This would lead to a "strengthening of Southern Hemisphere monsoons, and drying in Europe" and thus to new levels of climate induced migration, hunger and wars for survival.
