We are Seeking Experts to Join our Board of Experts

Just Atonement Inc. (“Just Atonement”) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that trains planetary defenders to address threats to human rights, a habitable planet, and the international rule of law.

We aim to address the complex and interconnected threats posed by climate change, global peace issues, the protection of human rights, and planetary habitability, which collectively pose existential risks to humanity.

Our Mission

  • Train new planetary defenders based on principles of international law who can advocate for a vision of a peaceful, sustainable world that protects and promotes human rights;

  • Incubate innovative new programs led by planetary defenders with high-impact mission statements designed to promote dramatic positive change;

  • Engage with the United Nations and international legal mechanisms to promote and protect a habitable planet, human rights, and the self-determination of all peoples; and

  • Provide training and programming to other lawyers, advocates, and law students to inspire them to align with the mission of Just Atonement Inc.

Our Impact

Residence Projects: Just Atonement supports groundbreaking residence projects like Earth Refuge (http://www.earthrefuge.org), the first legal think tank dedicated to climate migrants that hosts a legal Climate Displacement Case Database, and the International School on Climate Mobilities (ISCM). In 2024, the ISCM, co-hosted by Earth Refuge and SOAS University, featured 40 visiting experts and participants from 50 countries.

Internships: Our internship program has welcomed students from Harvard Law School, Columbia Law School, and the NYU School of Law. Interns engage in discussions on international law, human rights, and climate change and make submissions to the United Nations. Interns have delivered speeches at the UN Human Rights Council’s meetings in Geneva, gaining valuable advocacy experience.

UN Advocacy: Just Atonement regularly contributes to UN mechanisms related to human rights. We submit reports to various Special Rapporteurs and have submitted multiple Universal Periodic Reviews of the UN Human Rights Council, amplifying our impact on global human rights and environmental policies. As of 2024, Just Atonement Inc. is accredited by ECOSOC to participate at the United Nations and is also accredited by the UNFCCC Secretariat to attend annual COP meetings.

Future Directions

We are looking to scale and expand at this time in the following ways:

  • Expanding the internship program to do a 10-week, full time internship in the summertime, ideally in Europe, to provide interns an ability to work with international institutions in the Hague and in Geneva.

  • Expand our UN advocacy by accrediting more of our members to appear at the UN and at the annual climate change COPs.

  • Expand our Advocate in Residence Program to incubate new ideas and support new planetary defenders who wish to act as founders for positive social impact initiatives.

  • Expand our social media presence to encourage public advocacy of our efforts and to publicly defend a habitable planet, human rights, and the international rule of law.
